Kitchen cabinet bank #2

Woohoo!! The kitchen is looking so good and very bright! I already love it! I've started the second bank of top cabinets. But first, coffee back to our roots.

Remember that kitchen?

Food is back, backsplash down, desk laminate removed! Yay for food!

Upper bank #2. All of the upper cabinets have two coats of 7 DAY DRYING TIME primer. I'm still really struggling with that. The insides of all upper cabinets also have two coats of paint so they are completely done, except for the corner cabinet. I chose to paint only the top and bottom inside of the corner cabinet and I think I'll put a color in there later (I have no clue what color). Now, that's all lovely and great but here's my favorite part!

LET THERE BE LIGHT! Yep, I love it.

You may be wondering how I can be so excited over lights or paint or even furniture. This is where I live, where I work, where I care for my family, where I laugh, and cry, and love. This is where I sit and think about you!! It's an important place!

Kitchen, revisited

This kitchen is going to kill me be the most awesome room in my house! I was blessed with two nice days so outside I went to do some spray painting and cabinet door sanding! Woohoo!

See all my screws lined up below the hinges?! I'm OCD like that. I liked the hinges but wanted silver and I'm NOT going to spend $7 per hinge when I have a sunny day, an extra can of silver paint, and some little people that love to play outside!

Hmmm....... Looks like another garage cleaning post will be on the way. Anyway, I have been filling holes in my cabinet doors because the previous knobs were in the middle of the door(?why?) and I want them in the bottom corner. It is also taking lots of time to clean off the kitchen grime (eeewwwww!).

Remember this side of the room?

Go me!! I've scored some new treasures and I think this area is shaping up to be a coffee/tea bar (I know you're excited, mom)! Who loves the mid century chair?! ME!!

You can also see that my food is put away and I sold the tall shelving unit that was there before so you may realize that I've moved on to painting the next bank of cabinets.......................... To be continued!

My happy place.

I've been channeling my inner Emily Henderson to decorate my bedroom. If you don't know her, GOOGLE NOW, do not pass go, do not collect $200! This is what I do while I wait for my. everlasting. primer. drying. time. Have I mentioned that it takes 7 days to dry. 7 DAYS! I know, that fact has consumed me. Anywho, bedroom talk now!

Here's what I have going on so far in there. I know, thou shalt not covet my wallpaper. I hate it. However, it's amazing for hanging pictures because you have nice lines and flowers to help with measuring! The wallpaper will eventually go, new lamps, colorful pillow(s), and I will probably paint some frames so I can break away from the old lady vibe.

My chair (to be recovered).

His chair (to go away). Book shelves may be moved and painted. Console at end of bed will be painted or moved. Bedding is amazingly soft and comfy so it stays!

Can not mess with my new "I love you so much" dresser. Need curtains or something. Need carpet, or something. Fan............... Love/ hate relationship.

Now I just need a color scheme to go with my dark gray "I love you so much too" blanket! Any thoughts?

Hippos, Furniture and Fabric

It's a happy "look what I've found" post! We've been busy attending auctions and browsing the Goodwill!

Here is a great little record console that we snagged at the Buhler auction house. See that little gold knob on the front? We have the other two and maybe this post will light a fire under somebody's butt to put them on ( wink, wink)! Record consoles go fairly cheap around here and it's not likely to be worth more restored so Jeremy will put in a new record player and make it iPod compatible. I love old stuff that is secretly high tech!!

It took me about 1 second to run over to this $2.99 rocking chair at the Goodwill and grab the ticket and all I had to do was wait a few weeks and there was a perfect ottoman there for $2.99 also! I love this chair and I have claimed it to be MINE! I will recover everything at some point but I'm still trying to come up with a color scheme for my bedroom. To be continued............. Man that wallpaper is ugly.

Tell me you don't love this hippo!! He has a date with some white spray paint this week. Every time I see this, it makes me happy!

ALL HAIL THE HOT PINK AND GRAY IKAT FABRIC!!! What am I going to do with over 6 yards of this wonderfulness? To be continued..................

The chevron rug with just a smidgin' of little people! This cut into the pocket book a little, as 8x11 rugs do, but it was really a steal on overstock.com with a 10% off coupon to go with the fantastic $159 price tag.

And last but not least, MY DRESSER!!

I love this dude! When you put a piece of furniture in your home and you nearly cry happy tears, you know it was meant to be. I'm very thankful that not many people here like my style of furniture. It allowed me to snag this dresser for just $40. The picture alone just makes my heart happy. I'm in love with a dresser (sorry dear)!!

Am I the only mid century nut in my circle of friends? Oh wait, these things are my friends. Sad?! Nope. My dresser is always there for me and has never laughed once upon seeing me naked.

I hope you are filling your home with things you truly love, whether that is furniture, people, or................ Hippos!

Shelves and shelves and more shelves

Shelf priming is not a very exciting topic but here goes.

I sanded the shelves on both sides and edges with 60 grit sandpaper and then again with 150 grit. The higher the number on sandpaper, the finer it is. You want to have really gritty paper to get the finish and any other yucky things off of the shelves initially. If you were to stain or paint after that step, you would get finish lines (bad!). That is why you need to follow up with a finer paper. It gives you a smooth finish (yay!).

Once I finished sanding, I wiped them down with a damp cloth to remove all of the sanding dust and then started the priming process. It has been too cold here to paint in the garage so I set up sawhorses in my living room to do the job.

The shelves will be even more drawn out than the cabinets because I have to wait the 7 days for the primer to dry, ON EACH SIDE! I feel anxious just thinking about it. I may have to take up yoga just to survive this project!

There, the most boring post ever is done. I'm sure there will be more boredom to come but also lots of exciting "happy dance" kind of posts too. It's never all fun and games but the outcome is so worth it!
